Gluten and Your Oral Health

Gluten is a hot button issue in the world of nutrition and healthcare. Sensitivities and Celiac’s disease are becoming more easily diagnosed, and gluten-free products are becoming more mainstream. Can gluten, a protein found in wheats and grains, have any effect on your oral health?

Those with Celiac’s disease, where gluten affects the ability to absorb nutrients into the body, can experience the following as a result of their diagnosis:

  • bad breath
  • canker sores
  • damage to tooth enamel
  • tooth discoloration (brown spots)
  • canker sores
  • inflammatory gum disease

If you suspect you have a gluten allergy or Celiac’s disease, be sure to speak with your doctor.  The recommendation for Celiac’s is a completely gluten free diet.
