How to clean around your fixed retainer

Difficulties cleaning around your retainer?

If you have a fixed retainer due to orthodontic work, it may be tempting to just perform your normal brushing and flossing routine. They can be difficult to clean around, since you can’t take them out. Below are a few tips to avoid plaque build-up and cavities around your retainer.

1. Talk to your orthodontist

Ask your orthodontist for tips and any tools that may be helpful. Your dentist or orthodontist can provide you with floss threaders, sulca brushes, and other tools that may be helpful in cleaning around your retainer.

2. Take extra time and care to clean

Don’t avoid flossing, even though it takes longer. Use your tools and take time and care to clean as best as you can. Plaque build-up can be a real issue around fixed orthodontics.

3. Visit your dentist

Be sure to visit your dentist for your twice a year cleaning, and talk with them about your retainer to be sure you are cleaning properly. Ask whether an additional hygiene appointment may be necessary in order to keep your teeth as clean and healthy as possible.
