Probiotics and Your Mouth

In simple terms, probiotics are good bacteria that benefit your immune system, digestive system, and other aspects of your health. There are some foods and drinks that naturally contain probiotics such as yogurt, buttermilk, tempeh, kefir, and sourdough. You can also take probiotic supplements in order to add these helpful bacteria into your system. Some health professionals recommend the introduction of probiotics after a round of antibiotics. Antibiotics kill bacteria in your system–good and bad. In order to bring the balance back to your body, taking a probiotic supplement can introduce the good bacteria back into your body.

But this is a dental blog– what does this have to do with your teeth?!

Bacteria, as we know, plays a major factor in your oral health. Bad bacteria can cause cavities and gum disease. Good bacteria has been found to assist in a number of oral health issues. Taking probiotics (supplements or just adding them into your diet) can help with:

  • halitosis (bad breath)
  • canker sores
  • cavities
  • periodontal disease
