Juicing is an extremely popular way to get in your leafy greens and other fruits and vegetables. Whether you create your own juices at home or purchase them at a health food store, it is important to be aware that while healthier than some of their sugar-filled counterparts, even natural juices can be very harmful to your teeth. Acidic ingredients or ingredients with a lot of sugar (even natural sugar from fruits and vegetables) can begin to wear away at the enamel of your teeth, more so than if you simply ate the fruits and vegetables. In juice, they are in a higher concentration, and it is easier for those juices to linger on your teeth long after you are finished. Below are a few tips to keep your smile healthy while still enjoying the health benefits of natural juices:

  • As a given, brush afterwards, especially when drinking an acidic or very fruity juice.
  • Read your labels- if you are purchasing juice, even so called “healthy” or “natural” brands can contain much more sugar than you may expect.
  • Ingredients with very concentrated or dark colors can stain your teeth, just like wine or coffee (think beets, blackberries, etc.) .
  • Load up on the veggies. Juicing is a great way to get in more servings of vegetables, especially if you don’t typically enjoy them. Vegetables are loaded with vitamins and are low in sugar. Combining fruit with vegetables can mask some of the stronger flavors, but avoid straight fruit juices when possible.

As always, keep moderation in mind, and if juicing has become a part of your healthy lifestyle, keep it up! It can be a great way to consume natural foods on the go.
