Tips to Avoid Chipping a Tooth

Many dental emergencies involve cracked teeth. They can be painful, scary, but also–avoidable! Here are a few ways to ensure you don’t chip or crack the enamel of your teeth.

1. Don’t open things with your teeth.

You probably know you shouldn’t, but sometimes the scissors are so far away! Don’t use your teeth to rip open bags, open bottles (yikes!), assist in any fix-it projects, etc.

2. Don’t chew hard objects

This includes candy or cough drops that are meant to dissolve, and a common culprit–ice! It can be tempting, but one wrong bite, and your entire tooth can crack or chip.

3. Be careful when eating popcorn.

It is easy to do, especially when watching a movie or tv because our mind is elsewhere, but popcorn kernels can do a number on your teeth. Watch carefully for kernels and don’t chew them. Assist children with popcorn to avoid tooth chipping as well as choking.

4. Eat fresh!

There are occasions where stale goodies can look awfully tempting! Leftover Christmas cookies, Halloween candy, favorite snacks, and gummies can hide in the cabinet, and sometimes when there is nothing better to snack on, we may throw caution to the wind and try to eat them! Don’t do it– this can be a dental emergency waiting to happen!
