What is the cause of your snoring problem?

Snoring– it’s a common problem, and most likely, it isn’t bothering you. It may be bothering your spouse or your family, but often, those who snore are sleeping perfectly fine! However, snoring can be a sign of other health issues or sleep interruptions that you may not be aware of.

The most common causes of snoring are:

  • blocked nasal passage– a cold, sinus infection, or allergies can cause temporary or long-term snoring
  • a “bulky throat”– those who are overweight or children with enlarged adenoids or tonsils often snore
  • a soft palate or uvula
  • over-relaxed throat and tongue muscles– This can block you airway, causing snoring. Alcohol, sleeping pills, and deep sleep can lead to snoring.
  • sleep apnea– Sleep apnea can be a serious issue if left untreated. The throat tissues partially or completely block the airway when sleeping, causing breathing interruptions and snoring.
